  15. Apple Announces PowerPC Technology Upgrade Options for Quadra 605, Selected
  16. LC and Performa Models

  18. CUPERTINO, California--February 2, 1994--Apple Computer, Inc., today
  19. further detailed its extensive plans to provide current Macintosh
  20. customers with an easy upgrade path to Macintosh with PowerPC .
  21. Apple announced it plans to offer upgrades based on the PowerPC
  22. microprocessor for many of its best selling entry-level business,
  23. education and consumer products.
  24.      Apple plans to provide upgrades for its current line of all-in-one
  25. personal computers including the LC 520, 550, 575, as well as the
  26. Performa  550.  In addition, Apple plans to make future PowerPC
  27. upgrades available for LC 475, Quadra  605, and Performa 475/76
  28. product lines.  The upgrades will boost performance up to two to four
  29. times on existing Macintosh models when running native applications.
  30.      PowerPC is a family of RISC (Reduced Instruction Set)
  31. microprocessors, developed jointly by Apple, IBM and Motorola.  The
  32. new chip will fuel the next generation of Macintosh computers.  The
  33. first computers based on the chip are slated to be introduced in the
  34. first half of 1994 and join the Macintosh family of computers in mid-
  35. range and high-end systems.
  36.      "Virtually all of our current Macintosh systems being sold today now
  37. have an easy upgrade path to the future," said Ian Diery, executive
  38. vice president and general manager of Apple's Personal Computer
  39. Division.  "Apple's goal is to make PowerPC technology accessible to
  40. the broadest number of customers possible, and make it easy for
  41. customers to make their move to increased performance when they are
  42. ready."
  43.      The upgrades announced today are in addition to those recently
  44. detailed, which include:  Macintosh Quadra 840AV, 800, 660AV, 650 and
  45. 610 models; the Macintosh Centris  660AV, 650 and 610 computers; and
  46. the Macintosh IIVX, vi and Performa 600 products.  Additionally,
  47. owners of the Apple Workgroup server 60, 80 and 95 will be offered
  48. logic board upgrades to PowerPC processor-based systems which will
  49. run a version of the Macintosh System 7  operating system for the
  50. PowerPC processor.

  54. third-party developers to provide an array of options for customers
  55. to upgrade to PowerPC technology.
